Implicit Career Search

Five days that will shake your world! Implicit Career Search (ICS) helps individuals and teams connect to what is passionate and meaningful for them and bring that into their work. The results are careers and workplaces where people are more involved, more productive, more creative and have more fun.

Target Group: Regardless of your age, stage of career development, or field of work, ICS offers clarity, inspiration and a helpful structure for the process of choosing, building and managing your career.

Objective: To begin a process that will help you find the answers to the following:

  • Who am I and what do I really think and feel about myself?
  • What do I want to contribute?
  • What's preventing me from going after what I really want?
  • How do I limit myself at work (and in life?) and what can I do about it?
  • In what way do I need to grow in order to contribute to my own and my organizations' success?
  • Am I in the right job?

Content: The first step in answering the above questions is to embark on an inward journey, one powered by The Human Element. Here the focus is on developing and increasing self-awareness. We all have our own answers tucked deep inside of us and developing our self-awareness helps us to access them. People think they know themselves, but through The Human Element individuals get to know and understand themselves at a level far deeper than the personality level usually broached with traditional career exploration tools such as The Myers Briggs Type Indicator and other interest, values and aptitude assessments. In the process, answers to the obvious question, "Why am I not doing what I really want to do?" usually emerge as well.

Choosing or redirecting the career becomes an inwardly driven process, resulting in a career decision based on wanting to make a meaningful contribution, rather than a choice driven by pressure from above, ideas from someone else, your own fears, the demands of the shifting labour market, or, as in so many careers, sheer chance. From here the journey focuses outward on how to manifest this contribution in the real world. Guided by Canadian Steve Miller’s career development model, we take the first step on this outer journey by clarifying and taking ownership of our ‘meaningful contribution’ through formulating it as a ‘work purpose’ statement.

To enable you to align your career with your work purpose you will develop a detailed career plan charting the journey ahead. Miller’s Career Development Spectrum, outlining the five stages of career development and associated pitfalls, provides you with a clear map of the territory to cover and guidelines for progressing from one stage to the next.

Method: We use scientific assessments and theory, verbal and non-verbal group activities, body metaphor, guided imagery, interpersonal feedback, discussion, short lectures, case studies, coaching conversations and self-reflection. 

Duration: The entire journey, inner and outer, can be traveled over five intensive days. We also recommend coaching throughout the implementation of the career plan.

Another option is to divide the program. The first session (usually three days) focuses on the inner work of discovering oneself. This is followed up about two weeks later with a second session (usually two days) that continues with the work of developing the career plan.  Again, we recommend ongoing individual coaching support for the implementation of the career plan, whether it's to embark on a new career, or define a new path within the current organization.
